Neural implants might seem a long way off - but actually the number of commercially available implants are set to increase in the near future, with many companies “racing to develop brain implants” according to MIT Technology Review. How are we preparing students to consider and make decisions about their cognitive autonomy and privacy? This training introduces how neural implants work on a machine level and gives students an understanding of accompanying ethical and privacy concerns, as well as allows them to explore the potential of neural implants as a tool to improve healthcare, education and personal well-being if used responsibly and with consent. Students will be asked to form their own evidenced opinions on neural implants and engage in reflective and simulated activities that challenge them to set boundaries for their own cognitive privacy.
